World Heritage Region
Description of the World Heritage region
Considering the entire area of the 23 municipalities outside the core zone (settlements, agricultural area, traffic infrastructures), it is getting clear that the World Heritage Region is a highly valuable cultural landscape, created by men, thus exposed to risk due to structural changes. Totally 35.000 inhabitants are living today in the World Heritage Region. The territory of the region corresponds with 1748 square kilometers to the double surface of the World Heritage property. The focus of the management strategy of the UNESCO World Heritage Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch is linking the conservation of the property to the sustainable socioeconomic development of the region.
